Ilzstadt

The Ilzstadt nestles against the northern bank of the Danube around the mouth of the wild Ilz, towered over by the mighty Veste Oberhaus fortress that has crowned St George's Hill since the 13th century. Wedged between the steep castle hill and the riverbank, the quarter was largely spared the baroque makeover of the Old Town and has kept the character of an old fishermen's and boatmen's district. Narrow, partly cobbled lanes, the parish church of St Bartholomew and small houses bearing flood markers tell of life by the water.

The dark, moor-fed Ilz flows into the Danube here and lends the Ilzstadt its special, unspoilt charm. Short, steep paths and stairways lead up to the Veste Oberhaus with its museum and famous viewing terrace, from which the entire City of Three Rivers can be surveyed. The way into the green Ilz valley also begins practically on the doorstep.

If it is peace you are after, the Ilzstadt is the place: from the Luitpold bridge and the shaded riverside paths you enjoy some of the finest views of the fortress silhouette and the curve of the Danube. The quarter is a green, tranquil retreat, yet only a few minutes' walk from the lively Old Town.
