Museum of Modern Art Wörlen
The Museum of Modern Art – Wörlen Foundation occupies an ensemble of carefully restored Gothic townhouses on Bräugasse, just steps from the Three Rivers Corner at the eastern tip of the old town. The building itself is an experience: low door lintels, old wooden staircases, winding rooms and exposed masonry create a charged setting for modern art.
The museum was founded by the Passau painter and architect Hanns Egon Wörlen in memory of his father and the circle of artists around Georg Philipp Wörlen who were persecuted under National Socialism. Today it is devoted to classic modernism and international contemporary art and enjoys an excellent reputation far beyond Lower Bavaria. Its changing, high-calibre special exhibitions have featured works by artists such as Oskar Kokoschka, Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth and Alfred Kubin.
As there is no permanent collection in the classic sense, every visit is worthwhile anew — the programme changes several times a year. The unique combination of medieval architecture and avant-garde art gives the museum its special appeal and complements a walk to the nearby Three Rivers Corner wonderfully.
