Inn & Danube Promenade
The promenades along the Inn and the Danube are among Passau's loveliest walks and almost completely encircle the old-town peninsula — a circuit that shows the City of Three Rivers from its most relaxed side. On the south side, the quiet, tree-lined Inn Promenade accompanies the turquoise-green Alpine river. It is noticeably calmer here than amid the bustle of the upper old town: walkers and joggers enjoy the shade of old trees and ever-changing views across to the Innstadt and the pilgrimage church on the Mariahilf hill.
On the north side, the lively Fritz-Schäffer Promenade runs along the Danube. It is lined with cafés, benches, the moorings of the great river-cruise ships and grand townhouses; opposite, the Veste Oberhaus rises above the water. On fine days there is a busy, cheerful atmosphere, and from the steps at the water's edge you can watch the ships come and go.
Both paths meet at the Three Rivers Corner at the tip of the peninsula, where the circuit comes full circle. Everywhere, flood marks and water-level gauges set into the ground recall the power of the rivers that have shaped the city's life since time immemorial — a striking, ever-present detail of this riverside walk.
